David Murdoch
My Orkney tours are created round what my clients want. I enjoy illustrating Orcadian archaeology, Orkney’s varied history, our beautiful beaches and fascinating scenery. I am at home both at Orkney’s well known World Heritage sites as well as the lesser known treasures we have to offer whether these are our many Festivals or Orkney’s famous food, drink and craft products.
I am happy both to work to your plans or to suggest itineraries - I am well used to coping with the unexpected and move easily from the archaeological remains to how North Ronaldsay’s seaweed eating sheep are faring.
I bring enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, Orkney to my walking tours and step-on guiding. Additionally my career, knowledge and experience enable me to put Orkney in its British, European and work-wide context. I am not just a Scot but one whose family background is in Border Reiver territory and Edinburgh. I know my Scottish History with both a History Degree and an aunt who wrote historical novels and took me, as a boy, to many of Scotland’s historic sites while researching her books.
My career in managing not for profit organisations has taken me to London then to Orkney and marriage - to an Orcadian from Sanday, one of Orkney’s Outer North Isles. We met through performing together in one of Orkney’s many cultural Festivals.
With past events management experience, I enjoy setting up tours for groups who want a lecturer and am happy to speak formally and informally on a large range of topics including why and how Orkney became part of Scotland and Orkney’s importance in the World Wars.
